Information You Didn't Know You Needed To Know...

Are You Sure
You're Secure?!?

Did you know that there is an
Online Shadow Economy
worth over $105 BILLION
with some people boasting
about making $10,000
in a single day?

INFORMATION IS YOUR
BEST WEAPON FOR PROTECTION

Many years ago viruses and trojans now known as Malware, was about the bravado of being able to not only infiltrate your system but also bringing it down by corrupting it to the point of inoperability.

Today crashing your system will rarely occur because
it is about only one thing; MONEY!!!

Although much of the Online Shadow Economy is run by organized crime, it also has all the attributes of a traditional economy such as division of labor, price competition, marketing, etc.

It is bigger than the global drug trade with a sophisticated online black market containing tens of thousands of participants with the opportunity for BIG CASH along with little chance of being caught.

"Why I am taking the course? - To try to keep one step ahead.
What do I hope to gain? - I watched my Windows disappear, I watched my cursor move all over the page without me and uninvited, I watched my signature appear on documents that I have never seen before; knowledge would be nice ."

Mechanics of the Online Shadow Economy
EXPOSED

  1. MALWARE WRITERS
    • Writes MalCode for a minimum of $250 and for an additional $25/mo you can subscribe to updates that ensure you continue to evade detection by continuously testing the programs against the current antivirus programs creating enough confidence to guarantee their work.
    • Research suggests that these Malcoders can produce new and unique malware every 45 seconds to keep from being detected.

  2. MALWARE DISTRIBUTORS
    • Centralized distribution of malware programs because most Malware Writers don't distribute their programs. Instead they offer them for "Educational Purposes Only" to assist them in eluding prosecution.

  3. IDENTITY COLLECTORS
    • A complete Identity Package consists of the Full Name, Address, Passport or Drivers License, Credit Card Numbers, and Bank Account information and normally sells for $5.00.
    • Credit Card Numbers are sold for between 2%-5% of the Available Balance.
    • Offer customization of your order sorting the Identities by Country, Industry, Role, and Credit Cards by Available Balances.

  4. BOTNET OWNERS
    • Partner with ID Collectors, Spammers, etc. for the explicit purpose of installing Botnets to control millions of poorly protected computers belonging to innocent users from all over the world

  5. CREDIT CARD (AB)USERS, eSHOPS, DROP SERVICE, MULTIPLE DROPS, DROP SITE DEVELOPERS, AND RESELLERS
    • This intricate part of the Online Shadow Economy is basically the Credit Card
(Ab)Users purchase the data collected by the ID Collectors and then either purchases goods from eShops which then ship them to Drops (people designated to receive the goods) or uses a Drop Service either of which then use various methods of selling the goods for cash with each member of this chain taking their percentage of the cash acquired. Essentially this is Credit Card Laundering.

  6. SPAMMERS (via the Use of Botnets)
    • Phishing Scams
    • Contract to sell products for various companies
    • Spam Scams duping you out of cash and/or your personal information.
    • Social Engineering techniques to get you to go to Mal Sites that will then infect your PC with malware for various purposes.
    • Any other clever schemes that use email for the initial method of delivery.

  7. GUARANTEE SERVICES (There Is No Honor Among Thieves)
    • Arose from the need for these people to protect themselves from fraud and rip-offs. Charges 2%-3% of the transactions for their services.
    • The Guarantor Service assures the transaction will take place and will pay even if one of them fails to come through.
    • The Escrow Service holds the money for services rendered and once the recipient is satisfied it releases the funds.

"The course was really informative, I didn't have a clue about PC Security went I started the course. Now, I consider myself very knowleageble on the topic. The instructor's writing style was simple to understand but very informative."

"I used to consider myself the security conscious individual, but after only four of these classes I will be the first to admit I was wrong. I never really had an insight as to how hackers think or how they try to exploit situations…we are not as concerned as we say we are or we would be doing something about it. So far this class is proving to be worth its weight in gold."

MALWARE ATTACKS: The Statistics of Their Success

According to the SANS Institute, the average lifetime of an unprotected PC
on the Internet is 30 minutes before becoming infected.

What Happened in 2007?

  • 410,000 new malware samples were identified; 1/3 more than all of 2006.
  • High priority vulnerabilities increased 28% from 2006.
  • 90% of all vulnerabilities can be exploited remotely.
  • 50% of all exploited vulnerabilities gain access.
  • Classic malwares like virus, worm, spyware, etc are being replaced by the digital equivalent of a Swiss Army knife these are known as Blended Threats.
  • 20% of identified vulnerabilities of the Top 5 vendors such as Microsoft, Apple, and Oracle remain unpatched (50% of those have No Patch!); this is in contrast to 50% of those identified as Others remain unpatched.

Evidence indicates that Internet exploiters continue to use
identified vulnerabilities due to the continuation of un-patched machines.

  • The timeframe a malicious website remained live increased from 18 days in the first half of the year to 29 days in the second half of the year, a 62% increase.
  • The timeframe the site hosting the malicious websites remained active increased from 21 days in the first half of the year to 61 days in the second half of the year, a 190% increase.
  • Upon their initial outbreak, 21% of the malware did not have an associated antivirus definition meaning you were 100% vulnerable to the attack.
  • There were 61% more malicious web events in the second half of the year.
  • Using Trojans and backdoors, one of the most frequently infected
    were the Online Gamers.
  • The Top 10 Malware Families were used for 97% of the year.
  • The Storm Worm, a well thought out malware that resulted in an extremely organized series of attacks led to the creation of one of the largest botnets, estimated to be well over 1.5 million infected machines at any given time.
  • Data Theft hit new records with T.J. MAXX having 45.7 MILLION Credit and Debit Card numbers stolen. The UK Government lost the personal data for 25 MILLION people.

STEALTH TECHNIQUES ON THE RISE!!!

A website was compromised by redirection/code injection that resulted in forcible malware installations (aka Drive-By Downloads) subjecting its visitors to a wide assortment of downloader and dropper Trojans along with assortments of backdoor and password-stealing Trojans for a
total delivery of 430 files with the visitors totally unaware.

(Sources - IBM ISS X-Force 2007 Annual Report and ScanSafe 2007 Annual Global Threat Report)

That Was Then, This Is Now
2008 Mid Year Statistics (Highlights)

  • DNS flaw affecting the backbone of the internet, which could potentially redirect you to a malicious site without you knowing it.
(The DNS Changer Trojan increased 249% during the second half of 2007 indicating that this was already being exploited.)
  • Online gamers continue to be affected.
    • The Password Stealer, Trojan-PSW.Win32.OnLineGames, is #1 in Top 10 List
    • Game related malware is taking 50% of the Top Ten spots overall.

  • Browser exploits continue to grow with unpatched browsers and plug-ins at the top of the list. 51% of the disclosed vulnerabilities were browser related.
    • Internet Explorer has not only the largest market share but also the largest number of users without the most current patch. This is in contrast to Firefox with a distant second in Market Share but has the smallest number of unpatched users.
      • IE - 52.4% Unpatched with a 78.3% Market Share
      • Opera - 43.9% Unpatched with a 0.8% Market Share
      • Safari - 34.7% Unpatched with a 3.4% Market Share
      • Firefox - 16.7% Unpatched with a 16.1% Market Share

  • As of June 4, 2008 the attrition.org database, DLDOS, has recorded over 1,000 breaches involving over 330 MILLION records since 2000.
  • SC Magazine's May edition reported 223,334,777 records containing sensitive personal information involved in data breaches in the US since January 2005.

MALWARE ATTACKERS SHIFT THEIR FOCUS

A shift of focus from individual computers to web servers is being documented with the object of attack being the website visitor using SQL Injections as the favorite tool of choice to compromise the website. 78% of all compromised websites used this form of malware.

This resulted in a 278% increase of web based malware for the first half of 2008 delivered by fast flux botnets. Much of the compromised websites remain undetected by the visitor while adding password stealers and backdoor Trojans often employing rootkits and other stealth technology to avoid detection.

Did you know that "YOU ARE THE WEAKEST LINK?!?"

Here's what the professionals have been
saying about PC users recently

  • "Families use complex technology in the home, but due to their technical naivety are often unaware of the requirements to maintain the security and privacy of these technologies." - Jack Holleran
  • "There is no fundamental difference between an enterprise user and a home user. Both groups are largely technically ignorant and thus responsible for the majority of security incidents we see...Security training begins with awareness...It's about making the effects of poor security intensely personal. I fear we have to return to aggressive fear, uncertainty, and doubt if we are ever to get the masses to protect themselves." - Winn Schwartau
  • "...spammers have targeted the weakest link in the chain: human nature. Humans are oftentimes gullible and inquisitive, and spammers are taking full advantage." - David Kelleher
  • "People are often the most overlooked element in any security strategy
...if the people are not engaged, data breaches happen." - Gordon Rapkin
  • "You need to teach users to have healthy skepticism...In the future, most of the emails trends that we'll see in social engineering will be more personal and more targeted...Additionally, companies such as Facebook and MySpace will have a greater role in these scam emails because victims are making public so much information." - Eric Butternam

WAIT!!!
STOP RIGHT
HERE!

You don't need to know any more because
this will never happen to you, right?

Have you ever played Russian Roulette?

Of course you haven't, but with an Online Shadow Economy writing endless MalCode to take advantage of persistent software vulnerabilities in order to obtain your personal information, it is getting to the point that you must always keep these things in mind whenever you are online.

It is impossible to be confidant that you can ever know how
many cyber chambers they are using or how many cyber bullets
these people have aimed at you at any given moment.

Do you believe that there is nothing you have that they want?

NOTHING COULD BE FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH!!

Even if you don't have a credit card and/or don't do banking or shopping online, your name, address, phone, date of birth, etc. is still VERY valuable. For example, your identity can be used for getting ID's for illegal immigrants or passports for terrorists which can put you on the No Fly List for starters.

It's up to their creativity how your identity WILL be used!!

No one is safe, not even us!!!

We are professionals with the latest and greatest
tools and techniques and have recently documented
two different instances of Drive By Downloads in the past several weeks!

Would you like to know what happened? - Visit our homepage at http://mice.org/

There will be a YouTube video called "Drive By Downloads Exposed"
Below the video is a link to a PDF called The MalAd Report

Unfortunately surfing, playing, working online has become equivalent to Russian Roulette. You can play and never be affected....OR NOT.

As dramatic as this may sound,
it's closer to the truth than you may ever realize.

My name is Nick. I am taking this class because the only way my dad is letting me have an internet connection is if I know how to protect myself on the internet and if I know how to create my own home network. I feel it is also good to learn this information for my own good.

Wow! I can't wait until my teenage son gets home tonight so we can take a look at his laptop and change a few settings. He never thinks anything bad will ever happen to his computer from a wireless connection! Thanks so much! - Patti

I have always noticed how easy it is to watch people enter pin numbers at stores. Even when you aren't trying, it's hard not to notice how lax most people are. These are usually the people who are "shocked" when they read about a large company that was hacked for millions of credit card numbers. What they don't realize is that security begins at home. Secure yourself and your world, don't leave it up to the companies or you'll probably regret it. - Stephen

What does surprise me is how vulnerable folks are to hackers, virus makers, etc. knowing that they exist and simply don't care. For example, I was talking to a friend of mine recently, who was bragging about his wireless home network. I asked him about firewalls and what other precautions he took. His answer was "I'm not worried about it because I don't have anything anyone would want." I wanted to argure with him, but felt like what's the use. - Rick

--PC Security Students*

Have you ever thought about what it would take to recover if your personal computer and/or identity had been compromised or stolen?

The results of these breaches can easily be the loss of your personal time, varying degrees of your money
and even your personal data

YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION

CREDIT CARDS - - Even though these fraudulent charges are absorbed by the Credit Card Companies, they have become significant enough to become a cost of doing business that affects their bottom line. Who do you think eventually pays for this? It's not the investors/stock holders, it's their customers and/or employees!!

BANK ACCOUNTS - If a key logger or password stealer results in access to your personal accounts and cleans them out there is no recovery for these losses.

Some people don't discover the Identity breach until a collection agency calls them for charges they never did. Until you get this validated you get to deal with the barrage of calls and possible harassment they are famous for.

What if the ID Thief was a person known to you such as a business associate, fellow student, friend, family etc? - The cost of this loss is in relationships that may or may not be recoverable; trust can be difficult to rebuild.

YOUR PERSONAL COMPUTER

INTERNET PROVIDER - If your computer becomes a netbot, your internet provider can suspend your account until you fix the problem.

REPAIRING THE INFECTION - Much of these malwares become resident and duplicate themselves making removal difficult and sometimes impossible.

  • This forces you to have it professionally repaired. Due to the immense time it can take to repair this problem, the normal fix is to do a "Reset To Factory".
  • This does not include the installation of your programs and in many cases doesn't include updating your operating system to its current patch level leaving you more vulnerable. This can easily involve 4-8 hrs or more of updating and installation.
  • If you do not practice consistent backup behavior this can easily result in the complete loss of your data such as email, browser favorites, music, pictures, movies, personal files, etc. This type of loss is incalculable.

Did you know that those ID protection companies
do not cover any of the above scenarios?

There is no way to fully state the ramifications of what will happen if your identity and/or computer have been compromised. The above is just a very small sample.
It is up the creativity of the thief as to how it will be used.

Have we raised your awareness with this information as to the severity of this problem?

ARE YOU STILL SURE
YOU'RE SECURE?!?

Introducing Your Instructor & Author

Debbie Mahler

Debbie Mahler

Debbie’s first exposure to technology was in the mid 70’s when her work as a Sr. Financial Analyst for 1st National Bank of Chicago was being automated with punch cards. She was instantly fascinated with this "new" technology and sought out mentors and various other sources of information to teach her both the hardware and software, from DOS to Windows Vista including the various applications that were created for the personal PC. Debbie has also been actively online since the days of the Arpanet, the precursor to the Internet. Although she has never been officially certified, her vast expertise has consistently outperformed those who are.

Her passion eventually developed into a part time business called Mahler Independent Consulting Enterprise or M.I.C.E with the purpose of helping small and medium size businesses get up to speed with this new and developing computer technology. This consistently involved some form of training. As a result, she added Training & Technology to her business name. Eight years later, on June 17, 1998, she went full time.

Shortly after this a virus attack got past her McAfee Virus protection software obliterating her business computer. This infuriated her and initiated a vengeance to learn exactly how this happened to ensure it never happened again. This vengeance eventually turned into a passion that endures to this day.

Four years ago, while teaching HTML classes at an online education institution, she decided to take this passion for PC Security to the masses realizing that one of the largest factors of becoming a victim are the undereducated end users. She designed these courses with a wealth of technical information that was easily understood. She receives constant praise from students, both the technical and the novice about the quality, depth, and ease of learning for her courses.

Two years ago she researched and developed an Identity Theft eBook and has now turned that into a full fledged course with the same integrity and passion as her PC Security courses. Debbie’s passion for these subjects is sort of turning her into a "Lone Ranger of PC Security/ID Theft" for the general public.

P.S.  The Number One problem in combating these issues of PC Security and ID Theft is not only lack of education but apathy!! So many people I talk to either have no clue how important it is to properly protect themselves or just blindly believe that either it won't happen to them or they don't have anything these thieves would want.

Find out for yourselves. Set Google Alerts for "ID Theft", "PC Security", "Malware" or any of the other terms that have been used. Your Inbox will consistently receive this info on a regular basis. You will be amazed at how often it happens! I know I am.

I am here to be Of Service to you!
It is the NUMBER ONE reason I do this!!!

P.S.S.  YOU WILL NOT GET A BETTER EDUCATION ANYWHERE!
Other courses that teach these subjects are normally for those working in the IT industry and are taught in a very technical manner. I've been told by some of my IT students that they learned the same things but my courses were easier to grasp and even contained some things those didn't!

I've painstakingly designed all of my courses to not only be filled with technical information but have also studied in detail how people learn to ensure that this information is presented in a way that all can grasp. Knowing full well that this is a lot of information I constructed them to be self paced to ensure that they can easily accomodate anyone's busy schedule.

Knowledge is the Best Weapon to Protect Yourself
to Be Sure You're Secure.

Just casually listen in on phone calls while you are walking through the mall; it's amazing what you can learn about people, even if you don't want to know! - Rick

Are you a MAC or Linux user?

Although many of the malware attacks are most famous for attacking the Microsoft opearing systems, recent events are showing growing trends with both the Linux and Apple operating systems. We have documentation to prove it.

Many of the elements taught in these courses are independent of the vulnerabilities of the operating system, therefore regardless of which one you use much value will still be gained.
