"Where Metaphysics and psychology meets Technology"
September 2004 VOLUME I ISSUE I
NOTE: This is an actual duplicate of our first issue

ISSN: 1554-0782

Welcome to the introductory issue of MPS Technology!

I must admit I was quite surprised by the interest in this subject based on the size of our subscriber list.

I guess the first place to start the introductory issue to explain exactly what MPS Technology news is about.

MPS is an acronym for the words: metaphysical, psychological, and scientific. This is the newsletter where the three concepts or studies converge.

I know, that probably doesn’t say much more than the title or the description of the newsletter in our list describes. But bear with me; I’m sure I can make it clearer.

Technology is a science-based field. Computers run on electricity through a series of electronic components. Therefore, computers are an exact science based on the scientifically known rules governing circuits and electrical law.

There are also known physical laws governing the interaction between humans and electrical equipment - the laws governing electricity and physics. For example, in winter your home becomes dry and you walk across a carpet creating static electricity. You touch the metal case on your computer and you see a spark. This is physics working with electrical laws. That’s the science part of this newsletter.

How the end-user (you) feels toward that computer is psychologically based. An older computer user, who has not been raised in the Age of Information, may feel intimidated by technology. Afraid they are too old to learn. A younger user, raised in the fast paced environment of our electronic age may feel that they are some how inept at certain skills others their age seem to have. Perhaps it may be something as simple as being overwhelmed with the barrage of information that is coming at them from cell phone text messaging, amount of e-mails and UCE mail, banner ads and pop-ups flashing across the screen, and a whole host of other messages pounding us every day.

How you, as a PC user respond to your emotions surrounding technology affects your use of it. This is the psychological aspect of this newsletter.

Metaphysics is a science also. Although not as widely accepted in the scientific world, it is referred to more as a philosophy. The roots of which can be traced back to Plato through Aristotle to Kant.

The Encyclopedia Britannica gives us this definition of Metaphysics:

"Branch of philosophy that studies the ultimate structure and constitution of reality   i.e., of that which is real, insofar as it is real." ("Metaphysics." Britannica Concise Encyclopedia. 2004. Encyclopedia Britannica Premium Service. 5 Sept. 2004 .)

The term literally means, "what comes after physics."

Because it is not an empirical science based on what you can see, study, and document with scientific method, it is considered a philosophy more than a science. Whether scientifically or philosophically based, metaphysics explores areas science will not touch.

One of my speaking topic called, "Why does my computer seem to hate me?" is based in metaphysics. It explores the factual scientific proof we have been able to observe about the interaction of electrical current and a PC, along with the psychological aspect of the end-user, and combines the metaphysical study of unknowns such as spiritual energy (ghosts), ley lines, and more.

Metaphysics requires a person to step outside the rational mind and the senses and look at what is not so apparent. In order to understand whether or not you are meant for this newsletter, I want you to take this simple test. If you can confidently state that the scenario I’m going to present you with in this test, may or may not exist and consider both sides of the topic without forming a decision about whether it is true or not, then you will not only understand this newsletter but appreciate it. If you cannot accept the following scenario nor understand why I even present it, then unsubscribe using the unsubscribe information in your e-mail link.

The test scenario is as follows:

A known fact of science is that Newton discovered the physical law of gravity on our planet. Our atmosphere exerts a force upon our earth that keeps objects on the planet and not floating off into space.

Scientists claim that space above our earth’s atmosphere does not contain gravity and therefore astronauts are weightless in space.

Metaphysics would state the following points. Since we know the physical law of gravity is in action on our planet, we have determined that space does not operate under that law because we do not see the same reaction to gravity as we see on earth. And, from what we understand about gravitational pull under this law, we know that space above our planet does not have the conditions present to create a gravitational pull that our atmosphere creates.

However, metaphysics also raises the following questions because of these points: If we are basing our knowledge of gravity on what we know exists within our own reality (earth), is it possible that there is some force like gravity at work even in the weightless environment of space? Is it possible that there is a gravitational pull within our galaxy that holds the galaxy together? And if so, is it not also possible that once we exert force greater than the pull of our galaxy gravity, we can move beyond the limits of space to enter other galaxies gravitational pulls? And is it possible that the gravitational pull within the galaxy is different from the pull of gravity as we understand it on our planet? Is it possible that something exists outside our current understanding and because we have not experienced it nor seen it, we have not explored it? [End of Test]

It is this type of thinking that has enabled mankind to move beyond its limited thinking. We need only look at the "World is flat" theory and the "Earth is the center of our solar system" belief to recognize this misjudgment of egocentric thought.

As human beings, we believe that our senses do not lie to us. That scientists know everything because they are the experts. That we are rational beings and know what is truth by what we see, touch, hear, smell, and deduce by rational problem solving. This is an egocentric point of view based on "we". Because "we" as a collective whole experience it, see it, and believe it, it must be true.

Metaphysics believes that there exists a thing, ideas, concepts that we have yet to learn or experience. Therefore, they may exist and come into our reality at some point in time. And that just because we have not noticed them, understood them, nor experienced does not mean that they might not exist.

Metaphysically minded persons are fascinated with Stonehenge for instance. What was this great circle built for and how did they do it with primitive instruments? We call metaphysics a "new age" science, but in Stonehenge we see a living example of metaphysical thought in action. And this predates our common era by thousands of years! Metaphysics is not "new age" nor is it "unscientific." There is nothing unscientific in Stonehenge; it has its base in the roots of astronomy – a very exact science.

If you have been able to stick with me this far, you are a candidate for this type of newsletter. If you are shaking your head and asking yourself, "What the…?" Then unsubscribe; this newsletter is not for you.

And for those who are staying with the newsletter, I close with the catch phrase from the television program, The XFiles, "The truth is out there." Perhaps we will find it together.
